Body By Bethenny with Bethenny Frankel Review

by Natalie Belford

I love warming up at home with some yoga on chilly days. Body By Bethenny with Bethenny Frankel is a great DVD to help me do this. This DVD comes with three workouts: a 40 minute yoga program, a ten minute strength training segment, and a five minute booty blast that tightens and firms your behind.

This workout takes great pains to be something that fits into an everyday lifestyle.  The yoga segment works out all major muscle groups while increasing flexibility.  It’s a nice little all-in-one DVD that stays interesting without being too intense.

Pros:

  • Reasonable Time Commitment: This workout strikes a perfect balance in the time it requires you to commit.  Forty minutes is just enough time to get in a great workout without things lasting too long.  Having the optional strength and booty segments lets you extend the workout if you want, but just the forty minute main section is enough to work most of your body.

  • Low Intensity Level: I love doing yoga before bed, but many yoga workouts these days stress calorie burning over strength and flexibility.  This workout does not.  It’s a lovely way to stretch out and relax before heading to bed that won’t get you too keyed up to sleep.  It will give you a workout and your muscles will get stronger after time, but it won’t completely tire you out or rev you up.

  • Likable Host: I’m not familiar with Bethenny Frankel’s other pursuits, but I found her to be a charming and effective workout personality.  She stayed encouraging without being obnoxiously peppy while offering great advice and useful modifications.

  • Easy to Modify: Throughout the workout there are many options for modification.  Because of this I think a wide variety of people at varying levels of fitness could get a lot out of this DVD.  I found the intermediate level to be perfect for a before-bed yoga session.

Cons:

  • Might Be Too Chatty For Some: The two women in the video keep up a pretty steady stream of chatter throughout the workout.  If you prefer a quieter yoga experience you may not like this as much.  Personally I don’t mind the chatter, but if it gets on my nerves it’s easy enough to turn down the volume and just follow the visual cues.

  • Not Much Cardio: The focus of this video is definitely strength and flexibility, not burning large amounts of calories.  The booty blast section does provide a bit of action, but not enough if you’re looking to lose some pounds.  However, the workout isn’t so long that you can’t pop in a quick cardio workout afterwards to even things out.

I found Body By Bethenny to be a nice home yoga video.  It wasn’t so strenuous that I couldn’t do it before bed, and the strength and booty sections add some variety if I want to work out during the day.  Bethenny is fun to work out with without getting annoying.  It’s good, straightforward workout I’d recommend to anyone looking to learn more about yoga.
