Power 90 In-Home Boot Camp Review

by Natalie Belford

I love doing workout videos at home when I can’t make it to the gym, but I wanted to try something a little more intense than my usual dance videos.  Power 90 In-Home Boot Camp was exactly what I was looking for.  It offered me more of a challenge than I was used to and made for a great supplement to the gym.  The package came with two workout DVDs with eight workouts and two supplemental routines. It also included a Power Sculpting Band to add more resistance to the moves.  Finally, there were a collection of helpful Bonus Tools to track weight loss and other successes.

The DVDs are broken down into two sections.  The first includes sculpting and cardio workouts to be done on the first 45 days, and the second are more advanced versions of the same workouts.  Tony Horton’s Sectional Training Technique targets specific zones to make results come quickly and noticeably.  I’m in pretty good shape but I noticed a bit more definition in my waistline after doing these workouts for a few weeks.

Pros:

  • Different workout levels: this program has two clear workout levels that allow you to advance at a pace that works for you.  The first level is accessible to those who haven’t worked out much in the past, making it easy to jump into the world of exercise.  The second level is a bit more of a challenge and really works on toning and sculpting.
  • Lots of variety in cardio moves: I found the cardio portions of the workout especially fun to do.  They really work in a lot of different types of moves to keep things interesting and fun.  There’s kickboxing, Pilates, and some moves I don’t even know how to name!  The variety makes committing to working out each day a lot easier.
  • Power sculpting band: The addition of the power sculpting band was a great way to add some resistance to the workouts.  The band is easy to store and adds more variety and difficulty to the moves. I liked that it was a little different than the traditional free weights – it made the workouts much more interesting.
  • Difficult but not too difficult: The Power 90 program is meant to be done before the more intense P90x.  It’s a great introduction to the moves that are done in the more advanced program.  The routines are difficult enough so that you’re challenged and will see results, but they’re not so intense that beginners will get discouraged.  It’s a great place to start out.

Cons:

  • Power band gets easy after a while: After a bit of toning the power band that comes with the package might not offer enough resistance.  This wasn’t too disappointing to me, though, as it meant I was getting stronger!  More powerful bands are easy to find online, or you can always switch over to free weights.
  • Can be a little repetitive: Because you are doing the same workouts over several weeks it can get to feel a little repetitive over time.  However, many of the moves are able to be modified by adding more weights or more reps.  If you decide to you can make the workouts as easy or as challenging as you like, which keeps things fresh.

Overall the P 90 In-Home Boot Camp was a great way to keep in safe while at home.  The workouts did a great job of helping me work up a sweat and the supplemental materials were a nice bonus.  If you’re looking for an introduction to working out that’s still challenging you will love this package.
