So I had to try it. After doing the workout for a week I have say that the Bar Method DVD is great! It’s a pretty cool exercise routine that features ballet-like exercises to target specific areas of your body.
It isn’t high intensity at all and its not a fast workout like many other dvds. It’s not Yoga either although its quite like Pilates in some way. While it claims to be a total body workout, the dvd does overwhelmely focus on working your legs and bum. Yes, there are arms and abs exercises but I didn’t really like them… especially the abs exercise, which mostly just involved breathing hard in and out.
But the legs and butt exercises here are gold. The small movements used really work all the muscle groups, especially the tiny ones on all your legs and its a fantastic way to tone your legs, calves and butt.
The Bar Method elongates the thigh and seat muscles so that they sit higher on the hips. After about 10 lessons your legs look longer, your seat lifts, your abdominals pull themselves further back under the rib cage, and your shoulders, arms and chest become lean and defined.
It’s a far cry from squats and the endless amount of lunges you see in traditional aerobics videos. The exercises used in this DVD will really affect your muscles in a new way and you’ll definitely feel it for yourself. I didn’t sweat much but boy did I feel as if I was literally ’sculpting’ away at my body to produce a different look.
The instructor wasn’t too annoying and a major plus point was that you can turn off narration so you can do the workout without any verbal chatter. Yes, you could have just muted the whole thing but this is a friendly addition to a great dvd.
All in all, this is a fantastic toning dvd for all ages. It’s not fast-paced nor does it require a lot of explosive movement so its doable by most people. Do watch out for your knees though, some of the exercises might be tough on them so always do modifications (see the instructors for examples) so you can adapt.
I would recommend the Bar Method Designer Sculpting DVD just because of its novelty and because I’ve never quite done a toning workout for my legs and butts that worked as well. It’s really something to behold. My body looks/feels different and I’m pretty happy with it!
