The goal of yin yoga is to stretch and stimulate the fascia (connective tissues) of the body, and it works. It must have healing effects in the body because since doing yoga I have a lot less issues with pain after doing more strenuous exercises.
Another plus is that Paul Grilley is said to be the foremost authority for yin yoga, so you’ve got the ultimate expert guiding you and instructing you. The lecture is very informative and interesting and built up my enthusiasm for yin yoga.
A really unique and welcome feature on the DVD set is that you get two choices of audio with three of the routines. You can listen to the detailed instruction or switch to just queues.
Another terrific option is the customized playback of the practices to create your own sequences. As a person who has exercised to many, many DVDs, this is a great feature that I wish every exercise DVD included.
The movements include holding positions for a very long period of time, so it’s important to understand this isn’t about stretching. As stated before, it’s about opening up connective tissue. I think it’s important for people to pay attention to the instructions on the DVDs, that you listen to your own body so you don’t hurt yourself. You may have to work up to holding the positions for so long.
Pros:
- Includes a helpful lecture. If you don’t already know a lot about yin yoga, the lecture is especially helpful.
- Customizable playback. You have the option of putting together your own routine.
- Choices with the audio. Once you get the instruction down, on three of the exercises, you can change the audio to queues.
- You’ll feel wonderful. Yin yoga is, for me, surprisingly beneficial. I’ve never felt better or more relaxed, in spite of my already having been really fit when I began practicing yin yoga.
Cons:
- It’s pricey. I’ve found that it’s worth the price, but it isn’t cheap.
- Not for the hurried. You don’t want to go into the routines with the idea you’re getting some type of cardio. Yin yoga requires patience as you hold positions for up to 5 minutes.
Bottom line is if you don’t practice yoga, you should try it. Yin Yoga: The Foundations of a Quiet Practice is a great way to get started as well as being great, I’m sure, for people seasoned in the practice of yoga. It includes 8 audio-only guided yin yoga sequences of adjustable length.
