Yoga For Beginners DVD Review

by Natalie Belford

Yoga For Beginners comes with three separate DVDs to provide users with a variety of workouts. The first DVD is titled Yoga For Stress Relief and includes a discussion about meditation by H.H. the Dalia Lama. Inside the first DVD users will find a variety of routines that focus on relieving stress, such as Insomnia Issues and Letting Go of the Day. The routines in this DVD range in time from fifteen minutes to fifty minutes, with most of them lasting about thirty-five minutes.

The second DVD is titled Yoga for Beginners and also includes a discussion with H.H. the Dalai Lama. The second DVD is not quite as long as the first DVD, but still includes workouts ranging from fifteen to forty-five minutes. The third DVD called Essential. Yoga for Inflexible People is by far my favorite and comes with a variety of routines that just about anybody can do. Even better, this DVD comes with short and long workout routines making it a great choice for beginners who are starting to advance.

What I liked:

  • Peaceful Setting – One thing that I truly love about these yoga videos is where it was filmed. Many times I find exercise DVDs that have been filmed in a variety of locations, which some of them can be very distracting. For yoga videos, distracting settings are not very helpful. This DVD is filmed in Half Moon Bay and the setting is perfect for yoga because of how peaceful and beautiful it is.

  • Perfect For Beginners – One thing that I have ran into when buying other exercise DVDs is buying ones that claim they are for beginners, but then once I start working out I find that I have to be more advanced. This yoga DVD is perfect for beginners because it starts off with some of the most basic poses involved in yoga, but the pace also picks up later on. The pickup in pace is perfect because even beginners cannot go super slowly every time they workout.

  • Modifications – One problem that I have encountered with several exercise DVDs is there are not any modifications included for people who have issues making it impossible for them to do certain things. This pack of DVDs comes complete with modifications that can be used for every pose for those people who are not as flexible.

  • Range of Routines – Not only do the routines range in terms of what they focus on, but the length of the routines also vary. This DVD pack comes with 3 DVDs that each focus on something unique, so the routines are geared towards the topic of the DVD. However, what you will find inside the DVDs is routines that vary in length from fifteen minutes all the way up to sixty minutes.

What I didn’t:

  • Cannot see TV when lying on the floor – One of the biggest issues I have with this DVD set is that since it is for beginners nobody really knows what they are doing. I know I have never really done much yoga before so the poses in each DVD are really new to me. With that in mind, one would think that the instructor would go over the poses or something before adding them into a routine where you lay on the floor. When I lay on the floor I cannot see my TV, so following along is out of the question. The way I worked around this was to watch the DVD several times before doing the routine so I knew what poses were being used at the time.

  • Rather Fast Paced – I am one of those that enjoy a good intense exercise DVD, but this one was a bit too fast paced for me as a beginner to yoga. I often found myself having to stop what I was doing and rewind the DVD to catch up with what was going on. Since this is a beginners DVD I think it would make more sense to slow everything down.

One of my favorite things about Yoga for Beginners is that I am getting three workout DVDs for about the same price I would pay for one workout DVD. These DVDs come with more than 40 different routines that are for people with a variety of needs. I do have to say the Yoga for Stress Relief DVD is by far my favorite, but I also love how all of the videos include modifications for those of us who are not as flexible as the instructors are.
