Zumba Fitness Total Body Transformation System DVD Set Review

by Natalie Belford

I’ve been looking for a cardio series I can do at home for a while, so I was pretty excited when I saw the Zumba Fitness Total Body Transformation System DVD Set.  It looked like it was exactly what I was looking for.  I tend to work my way through exercise DVDs pretty quickly, so the fact that the set comes with four DVDs is great.  The six workouts hit every part of the body.  Even though I’m in pretty good shape I was definitely feeling the burn the next morning!   The maraca-like toning sticks were a really fun addition.  They gave the workout a unique flair that I’ve never seen before – I loved them!

The variety of workouts the set comes with is great.  The basics workout helped me get familiar with the different steps they use in the rest of the DVDs.  The sculpt-and-tone workout and flat abs workout definitely works you out really hard, and the 20 minute express workout had me working up a sweat without taking too much time out of my day.  The last two workouts, Cardio Party and Fitness Live are a ton of fun and really get my heart racing.  No matter what I’m feeling like on a certain day I can find a workout that fits my mood.

Pros:

  • A Variety of Dance Styles: While Zumba is based on Latin dance moves, there are other types of dance that you can choose from.  While I was working out I saw some belly dancing, flamenco, and even some country dancing!  They’re always switching it up to keep you engaged and entertained.

  • Accessible for Non-Dancers: I work out regularly, but I have to admit I’m not a dancer.  I was a little worried about whether or not I’d be able to keep up with the dance moves.  Turns out that wasn’t a problem at all.  They do a very good job of breaking down the different dance moves beforehand, so even people who haven’t had a lot of dance experience can follow them.

  • Toning Sticks are a Lot of Fun: I love the toning sticks that come with the set.  They make a little noise as you shake them, so you can be musical as you work out. It adds a little something extra to the workout to make it even more fun, plus the resistance adds a few more calories burned to each session.

  • Great Music: The music they’ve added to the dance routines is really top notch.  It’s very engaging and well done, making it easy to get caught up in the sound.  There were times where I forgot I was supposed to be working out because I felt like I was dancing in a club.  If you enjoy good Latin music, you’ll love this set.

Cons:

  • Toning Sticks Aren’t That Heavy: I found the toning sticks to be a little too light for me.  They’re only one pound, which just isn’t enough resistance for me to feel much of a difference.  However, I fixed this pretty easily by strapping on some wrist weights.

  • Beginner Workout A Little Easy: If you’ve attended a Zumba class before you might find the basics workout a little too easy for you.  I noticed I really wasn’t working up a sweat with it.  It helped me figure out some of the steps, though, so even if you find it a bit easy it’s definitely worth doing.

Working out with this Zumba set is some of the most fun I’ve had exercising in a long time.  The different workouts keep me interested and help me target the areas I want to work on, and the music is fun and engaging.  The toning sticks add a little bit of extra flair and fun.  No matter what your age or fitness level I think you can get a lot out of this workout set.  Just be careful – once you try it you’ll have a hard time stopping!
